"From Manchurian Princess to the American Dream" Book Signing with Sweet Briar Alumnae Dr. Anna Chao Pai
Author Dr. Anna Chao Pai will be having a book signing of her new memoir, “From Manchurian Princess to the American Dream: An Anecdotal Memoir of Two Immigrant Lives” at her Alma Mater Sweet Briar College in Sweet Briar, VA on Friday, September 20th from 5pm-7pm. Author and Alumnae Dr. Anna Chao Pai has published her new memoir that offers a look at modern Chinese history and culture. Her book provides insight into the impact of immigration on individuals who are ripped from their homes and find themselves beginning a new life in a foreign country. Dr. Pai illustrates that while most immigrants come to the United States for a better life, her parents came seeking safety. Dr. Pai went through heart wrenching obstacles but was able to overcome the struggles that come hand in hand with immigration through perseverance and hard work. Pai shares how she moved almost once a year, experienced discrimination against Asians during World War II, and attended twelve different schools all before starting college. However, she never allowed these challenging times to come in between her studies and work ethic. Her memoir shines a light on the challenge’s immigrants face when migrating to a new country and that the American dream is still achievable if one works hard enough for it.
