Second Stage | Amherst presents film series Ramblin’ Pictures, Sept. 27-Nov 22, a tribute to bluegrass and folk music in movies.
Every other Friday from Sept. 27 through Nov. 22, Second Stage | Amherst presents Ramblin’ Pictures: Bluegrass & Folk-Music Movies, a series of five films celebrating bluegrass and folk music.
From its origins, bluegrass and folk music has represented community. This series is intended to engage, entertain and provide cultural enrichment to residents of Amherst and nearby communities.
The film series opens with O Brother, Where Art Thou? (2000), a comedy that uses era-appropriate music to help tell the tale of three escaped convicts (George Clooney, Tim Blake Nelson, John Turturro) in deep south 1930s. The trio records a song for some quick cash, takes the money and runs with the law in pursuit. Unbeknownst to them, the recording becomes a hit, and eventually their salvation.
The biweekly series continues with Songcatcher (2000), a thoughtful drama about a musicologist (Janet McTeer) who stumbles upon Appalachian folk music in the early 1900s and is enchanted with the music and the local people; Once (2007), a sadly beautiful Irish romance about two struggling musicians (Glen Hansard, Markéta Irglová) as they make folk-pop-rock music in Dublin; A Mighty Wind (2003), an inspired mockumentary that traces various 1960s folk acts as they reunite to play a live, televised concert; and I’m Not There (2007), an imaginative meditation on folk-rock legend Bob Dylan’s character and artistry.
