Join us as we remember Hurricane Camille’s rage and destruction in Amherst and Nelson Counties during August 1969. Retired State Trooper Ed Tinsley will take us on a flashback journey of his 27 days in rescue, recovery and victim identification. Within a 12 hour period Nelson County received 27 inches (official record) of rain causing mud and rock slides, flash flooding and debris surging. There, “rainfall was so heavy that reports were received of birds drowning in trees, cows floating down the Hatt Creek and of survivors having to cup hands around their mouth and nose in order to breathe through the deluge.” Unofficial estimates were much greater with one farmer reporting 31 inches in a 155 gallon barrel, almost filling it, and more than 40 inches of rainfall at Davis Creek. One hundred fifty-one Virginia fatalities, with 125 in Nelson County. Let’s remember this tragedy by bringing a canned good to be donated to Neighbors Helping Neighbors of Amherst County. Light refreshments will be served.
